Hearing from Neighbors through the Flourishing Neighborhood Index

Every two years, we conduct a survey amongst our neighbors here in Historic South Atlanta. We use it to complete the Flourishing Neighborhood Index, which lets neighbors speak into our priorities as an organization and helps to set our long-term plans. It’s a chance for us to live out all three of our values — neighboring, dignity, and development — at once!

In it, we ask neighbors about what it’s like to live in the community, and how they think the neighborhood is doing overall. We ask about things like education, infrastructure, the local economy, and about the overall social fabric and feel of Historic South Atlanta. Except it’s not us who ask the questions, it’s other neighbors!

We know that neighbors might feel more comfortable answering honestly when they’re facing other neighbors and not just our staff. And the survey is about honest conversation. “The whole purpose is to see how the neighborhood changes or stays the same and how people feel they can vocalize that,” says Neighborhood Engagement Director Pamela Stringfield.

The survey is designed for a neighbor to be sitting down and going through the questions not like an interview, but as a more reflective experience. Right now, a group of 6 neighbors are wrapping up their conversations with other residents of Historic South Atlanta. They’ve interviewed close to 200 other neighbors!

After all of the interviews are finished, we’ll collect all of the responses and present the findings to the neighborhood association, South Atlanta Civic League. “We try to make sure we collect the information and share it, but not interpret it. We want our local leaders to do that part,” Pamela says. This step is critical to making sure we listen well and follow the neighborhood’s lead.

“FCS doesn’t figure out any marching orders,” Pamela states, “We hold onto what the community says and dreams up and then we’ll walk alongside our neighbors in HIstoric South Atlanta.”

As we said, surveys are wrapping up. Stay tuned in November for when we present the findings to the wider community of South Atlanta. We cannot wait to hear the dreams and visions our neighbors have for this incredible place.
