Revitalizing Communities Together

The Reclaiming Vacant Properties conference is all about turning dilapidated properties into thriving spaces.

The Reclaiming Vacant Properties conference is all about turning dilapidated properties into thriving spaces.

Atlanta just hosted the Reclaiming Vacant Properties conference last week. It’s a conference that the Center for Community Progress hosts that brings all types of people who have an interest and vocation in urban planning and revitalization. They get together to talk about turning “vacant spaces into vibrant places.” We’re all about this vision, we look at properties like a vacant gas station, or the building that became our office!

This year, the conference featured us as a site visit! We were thrilled to have government officials, other nonprofits, and passionate professionals coming through our doors! It was a great opportunity to share what we know and make connections for future innovation. In order to build a thriving community, we’re always looking to grow and deepen our partnerships with others doing amazing work.

Of course, we love getting to share some of the lessons we’ve gleaned over our forty years. Our Executive Director, Katie Delp, got to co-lead a workshop with South Atlanta neighbor Tanisha Corporal, Paven Iyer from EightVillage, and Heather Infantry from Generator. Together, they presented about how to revive “urban residue,” land left over from standard planning processes like backyards, alleyways, and shared lots. It’s places like this, the front porches, liminal spaces, where deeper neighboring occurs.

The conference theme, “Equity First: Revitalizing Communities Together,” gave our staff attendees a chance to hone ideas of how arts and culture help weave the fabric of place. Together, we discussed how to respond to disasters in a way that builds resilience. We relish the opportunity for mutual learning with our industry peers!
