Moving in the Spirit (MITS) is a non-profit youth development organization that creates and implements programs designed to provide constructive and creative outlets for young people. MITS programs allow students to gain leadership and life skills while improving their physical fitness. In this way, they can become successful, productive citizens capable of providing solutions to pertinent issues facing them and their communities.
Mission Statement
Moving in the Spirit utilizes the arts, and in particular dance, as fun and creative tools to develop workplace values and life skills; reinforce school curriculum; give voice to issues which are pertinent to youth today; and address issues of self-esteem. MITS teaches the values of respect, commitment, accountability, and responsibility through the arts and the discipline of dance.
Programs
- Stepping Stones – weekly dance classes for young beginners (ages 3-12) with a focus on reading, writing and drawing to create movement from topics pertinent to youth.
- Junior Company – young performers (ages 8-12) who take their message into the community promoting respect for others, determination, patience and a commitment to dance as a means of individual expression.
- Men in Motion – teaches workplace values and discipline to young men.
- Apprentice Corporation – intensive training for serious dancers (ages 13-18) that uses the discipline of various dance forms to teach problem solving and critical thinking. Ninety percent of Apprentice Corporation program graduates continue on to college or technical school.
- School Arts – in-school solutions for helping children learn and resolve conflicts. MITS offers teacher training, workshops, residencies and performances to assist in the learning process.
- Mentoring Program – students paired with adult volunteers who act as positive role models assisting children with homework, college preparation and exposing them to new educational and cultural experiences. Seventy-five percent of students who were matched in the program for six months or more last year either improved their grades or maintained a straight A average.
- Adult Classes – for adults, 19 or older, wanting to burn off some steam or learn dance.
Events
- The Big Show – annual performance of over 150 youth combining music, dance, drama
- AC Tour – Apprentice Corporation annual summer performance that tours major U.S. and European cities
- JC Tour – Junior Company annual performance that tours in the Southeastern U.S.
- Holiday Store – annual incentive program that allows youth in MITS programs to reap the rewards of their hard work, using incentive points earned in the program to purchase gifts for their friends, family and themselves
